You Can't Always Get What You Want...

The weekends are never long enough, or more likely I try to cram twice as many projects into the weekend as it can hold. I got a lot accomplished this weekend but I still headed to the airport feeling like I had so much left to do. Papa Peach was working 6am-6pm and as usual I planned on getting up when he went to work. This didn't happen and I ended up playing snooze tag until the crack of noon.
I was able to finish up the flannel rag quilt for baby Cameron. I snipped it last week while I was in Columbus and ran it through the washer when I got home. I love how they end up looking and its a great way to flush out your lint trap. I found two other flannel quilts in progress in the mess I call my office/studio. Here is a picture of the quilt going to baby Cameron this week. I also packed up 40 baby outfits for him and a stuffed camel that we had flea marketed on our trip.

And the back
I am also working on a rag quilt for Elizabeth's new foster baby. I got all the squares sewn and now just need to sew them together and snip the seams. I put together a bag of 30 outfits for her as well. I hope to have her quilt finished by next week since it is my last week in Columbus. I will post pictures as it comes along.
I was able to make some headway on the blogger block of the month front. I have two of the three colors of fabric cut. I need to get the last color finished and the fabric in the mail to the participants. We will be starting up next month come hell or high water. I made a button which you can grab on the side bar and also made a flickr group for the project. More details to follow on this project.
I finally got the package together for my mom. I have been gathering things for her since I saw her in Virginia for Ian's wedding. We went to a quilt shop in Richmond called Quilting Adventures. This place was awesome and still stands even after my mom and I blew through there. They had so many amazing display quilts I wanted to make them all. I showed great amounts of self restraint and only bought one fat quarter and not the 10 rulers and 20 patterns I wanted. My mom did not show as much restraint and got sucked into buying a pattern by Melly & Me called I come in peace. Here is a picture of the softie she will be making. She promised to send me a copy of the pattern if I would send her some "cosmic" fabrics from my stash. She held up her end of the deal and I have been slacking. So I put together the package of a lot of fabric I have been buying up that made me think of aliens. It just took along time to cut 9x13 pieces of all of them. Thankfully no one piece of the pattern is larger than that and I was able to add the rest to my stash. I also sent her a candle from Warm Glow in Indiana, a pair of Wedgwood Queen's Ware Teacups and a crazy parrot Hawaiian shirt I bought in West Palm Beach and some vintage lace napkins I found during our yard saleing.

I had buyers remorse after not buying the patterns in Virginia and bought a book by Melly & Me called Sewn Toy Tales. I got one for my mom too and a copy of the Farmer's Wife so I can join the quilt along. I am just chomping at the bit waiting for them to come in the mail.
I ended the weekend on a bus to Chicago surrounded by a planes worth of angry travelers as my flight to Chicago was cancelled. I run into airline drama so often that it no longer phases me. I am truly blessed to have a job that pays me well to skip around the country and supports my very out of control quilting habit. I have a man who loves me in spite of being a quilting widow. He is coming with me next weekend on the ferry across lake Michigan so we can help out with the end of the summer work party with Margaret's Hope Chest and Crazy Mom Quilts (more details here). He was upset I was going for the weekend and didn't invite him (he must have been sleep deprived at the time). I have been so blessed in so many way and want to give back any way I can.

In conclusion, take it from Mick, you can't always get what you want.

But if you try sometime, you just might find.....you get what you need.....

Happy Birthday Julia!

Julia Child's KitchenAid Stand Mixer

Now for something totally unrelated to quilting. While we were wandering on the yard sale across america we ended up spending the night in Greenville Ohio where the Kitchenaid factory & Store is located. We went to the Kitchenaid "experience" and were able to put our grubby little mitts on Julia Child's stand mixer! As today would have been her 100th birthday I thought I would share. Now go make something yummy in her honor.

The road is long with many a winding turn....

It's been a while since I posted but in my defense I have been hella busy. The first couple days of August (2nd-5th) we went on the Route 127 Yard Sale. This is the second year we have gone on a yard sale road trip. Last year we did the Lincoln Buy-Way. This year since we were closer to the 127 yard sale we headed that way. On the way there from Wisconsin we hit up a number of quilt shops for me and bike shops for Papa Peach. Two of the quilt shops we hit were Erica's in South Bend, IN (it was AWESOME!) and Lolly's in Shipshewana, IN. Lolly's is having a back to school sale during the month of August and all fabrics in the store are $6 a yard. I almost hurt myself shopping this sale, and they have a rowboat full of fat quarters, what's not to love! Then we spent the next couple days yard saleing and bought a bunch of random treasures. On the way home we hit the Warm Glow Candle Outlet. They have this giant candle outside. It's not the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota but it was cool to see and I bought a bunch of candles. The last quilt shop we stopped at was Quilts Plus in Indianapolis. They have a pretty good selection I would definitely stop in if you are in the area.
Last weekend I celebrated my 7 year anniversary with Papa Peach. I can't believe it has been 7 years since we met. Times flies when you are having fun.
On the quilting front I have joined the Dots Blog Hop at Quilt Taffy. I will be post my block on Sept 12th and will be sponsoring a give away of dotty fabric. I have been cleaning and reorganizing my sewing room/office at home. I will post pictures when I get it all situated. If you have pictures of  your quilting space Moda is sponsoring a Show Off Your Stash link party.
Things are coming together for my Bloggers Block of the Month. I have gathered a baker's dozen of blogger to join me in this adventure. I am finishing up the details and cutting of the fabric. More information to follow on that project. Here is the list of participants.

When I was cleaning up my sewing room I came across this flannel baby rag quilt.

I had finished up the stitching but not the snipping of the seams. My husbands niece just had a baby boy so I am finishing up this quilt for the new baby. I almost had to have words with the TSA at the Milwaukee airport as they were trying to yank my rag scissors. It turns out that they were on high alert since Mitt Romney was in town with his new Vice President Paul Ryan. I ran into the motorcade going in the opposite direction when I was on my way on the airport. I am also hoping to put together a quilt for my friend Elizabeth's new foster baby girl. It will be the same pattern but different fabric. If you want to make one of your own check out the tutorial here. I am linking this up to WIP Wednesday At Freshly Pieced!
My step daughter Gabby wants a red and blue quilt. I had been having trouble picking a pattern until I saw this picture at A Little Bit Biased. I love love love them.

Here's what I have been working up for her quilt. 8 point squares with mixed middles. Can you think of any I missed???

Just be patient, I'm a work in progress

I had a busy Saturday today. Papa Peach is working nights this weekend. I figured I would try to finish up some quilting projects and clean the house. It turned out that I didn't finish up any quilting projects but did get the living room cleaned and some Olympics watched. When I say I cleaned the living room. I mean I cleaned  the living room, couch moving, floor scrubbing, down and dirty cleaning. Here is a picture of my doggie Daisy who can't stand the thought of a freshly vacuumed rug. She is my shadow when I'm home, poor girl misses me when I travel.

On the quilting front here is what I have in the works....
Hand Pieced Star Quilt
New Wave Quilt For Megan's Mystery Gender Baby
Mamie's Pink and Black Log Cabin Quilt
Ian's Wedding Quilt

The quilting I did today was on Ian's wedding quilt. The top quilting is taking much longer than anticipated. I am also still looking for blogger's for the blogger's block of the month project. Here are the fabrics I have been putting together for the project. Going with Pink, yellow and greens...still adding to the collection. Each participant will get some yellow green and pink fabric to create a block. Let me know if you would like to participate. I'm off to bed1

Of travel I've had my share, man. These blocks have been everywhere.

Finally I have the blocks for Margaret's Hope Chest in an envelope ready to go in the mail tomorrow. I intended to have them mailed off before the end of June but clearly that didn't happen. I took them with me on my world tour trip to New Orleans, LA then off to Hattiesburg, MS back to New Orleans, LA and on a plane to Richmond, VA. While I was in Richmond my mom and I made some red blocks. I hadn't planned on making more blocks and bought quarter yards of fabric so some of these blocks are 9" square instead of 9.5" square. I packed the blocks with me to Cleveland, OH and finally back to Milwaukee, WI. Tonight I am in Columbus, OH and as God is my witness the blocks will be mailed tomorrow. Here are some pics of the final product (20 pink/10 teal/10 blue/13 red). Blocks come together so quickly! I love them!

Summer In The Park - Darn It's Hot!

I have been traveling a lot, sadly to hot hot hot locations. I have also been tied to my sewing machine when I have been home. My trusty old Bernina had a break down and had to go see the doctor for a couple weeks. After 40 years the old girls pedal gave up the ghost and had to be replaced. My compliments to Bigsby's Sewing Center in Elm Grove, WI who fixed my ladies broken foot and tuned her up. She is now running in tip top condition. I have been working on a quilt for a wedding present for my friend Ian. He is getting married for the second time and I wanted to make them a quilt for their wedding. I wasn't sure that I was going to be able to go to Virginia for the wedding since it is around the 4th of July and work didn't want to release me. As soon as I found out I had the time off I started sewing. I am still not done with the quilt. I have the top done and the binding cut and pieced. I just have to do the quilting and bind it. As a result I am in Mississippi with a suitcase dedicated to a sewing machine, quilt and the associated supplies. I am not traveling with my Bernina. She is an old heavy beast that will most likely out live me, but she is not airline friendly.
Since I have been working on the quilt I put together a tutorial of the process. The project idea came from the lovely ladies at the Missouri Star Quilt Company. I happened to be in Missouri briefly and was able to make a trip out to the store. I wish I lived there, they have the best deals of the day, and awesome store, templates a plenty, and great tutorials. I broke many speed limits to get there before they closed and they were nice enough to stay open even when I got there 10 minutes before they closed. The day I was there they had any fat quarter for $2, I was like a kid in a candy store. The deal of the day the day I was there was Moda Kona White at $3.49 a yard with a limit of 2 yards. It turned out to be just what I needed to make the quilt for Ian's wedding using this tutorial.
I have never been one for buying precuts, partially because I am cheep cheep cheep and partially because I like digging through my stash and picking out the pretty fabrics myself. So for this quilt I started digging and pulled these from my stash. My intention was to do a rainbow of pastels. It was also a pretty good excuse to go fabric shopping. I don't know about anyone else but I haven't been able to find many light peachy oranges or lavender purples. So in the beginning this is what we had.

Pretty Pretties
During the process I added and subtracted fabrics as it came together. To start this process you need to cut strips the width of the fabric, or purchase 2-4 jelly rolls depending on the size of the quilt. For each set you will need 6 strips. With two jelly rolls you can make 14 strip sets, each strip sets yields 6 7" blocks . You can be creative here mixing prints and solids depending on what you would like your final product to look like. The layout in the end can also vary the look of the quilt. For my quilt i decided to stick with a white background and pastels for the stripes. I wanted to use the center square as the focal point in my block and I wanted to control the color pattern. You will see what I mean in a bit. For each group I cut three white strips 2 1/2" and WOF. I also chose three colored fabrics for each group. When I was sewing I was putting together 2-3 sets at a time to bang it out as quickly as possible. In the picture below you can see the strips I cut to make two sets. If you are working with fat quarters (as I sometimes was) you will need to cut two 2 1/2" strips and sew them together to get a strip that is WOF.

Strip sets ready to sew
Once you have your strips cut its is easy sewing from here. If you are working with jelly rolls this quilt comes together very quickly. Take one strip of white and pair it with one colored strip, face to face and sew a 1/4" seam all the way down. For each set I would do this with two of the colored strips.

Once you have your colored strips sewn to the white strips press them toward the darker fabric.

Once you cut these strips you will have two different blocks. The strip set with one color and two white will be the same throughout, the set with two colors and one white will flip flop. Since I was using the one set to make a center square I would chose which strip was going to be in the center at this point. The pattern that I wanted to be in the center I would sew another white stripe to. The remaining (non-center) set would get another colored strip. Confused yet????? Maybe the picture will help! Then press the sets toward the colored strip.

So in this case the yellow print and the pink/red print are going to be my center squares. At this point you should have three strips sewn together in each group. You will pair a set with two white and a colored strip with a set with two colored strips and one white. Place these face to face and sew down the outside of each side. You will now have a tube of 6 strips sewn together that is the WOF. Within the tube the strips will alternate white and colored.

This is one long set of strips (folded over for the picture). You will lay the strip set out flat, using a ruler (mine is 9.5" square) line up the 45 degree line with one of the outside seems. Make sure the point of the ruler is past the selvedge of the fabric.

Using the ruler as a guide and a rotary cutter cut the strip set.

This piece can be added to your scrap bag. Move the ruler to the opposite seam (now the shorter side) and line up the 45 degree line up with the seam again.

Using the ruler as a guide and a rotary cutter cut the strip set. This will give you your first block.

Continue this process down the length of your strip set. You will end up with 3 of each block. In this case three blocks with a larger strip of grey and three strips with a larger strip of blue. Press the blocks open toward the colored strip. For my quilt I wanted  to lay out the blocks to have a square in the middle with the same color. The Missouri Star tutorial lays out the blocks with the colored points in the middle. This quilt can become many many variations based on your imagination, layout choices, and fabrics. Have fun! Final pics will be posted when the quilt is done!
