Feb Blocks for do.good.stitches

This block was a fun one this month. The post is here if you want to follow along. It was a good way to use up some scraps from the bin. I think this will make a nice quilt once it comes together. Next month will be my month to lead the group. Stay tuned for the fun and exciting block!

do.Good.Stitches-Nurture Circle......August Block

Greetings.....Welcome to the Peach Patch if this is your first visit......I've been oftly quiet recently.....

Today I am posting a tutorial which I hope you will enjoy. This is my first month as quilter for the Nurture circle of do.Good.Stitches. I had been trying to get involved with this program for some time and some space opened up. As a bonus the Nuture circle makes quilts for one of my favorite charities; My Very Own Blanket. I have had the chance to make quilts for this charity before and go to the workshop to sew in Ohio. I struggled to decide what block to pick for the quilt. I flipped back and forth from traditional blocks, tutorials already floating around the internet or creating one of my own. In the end I created on of my own, at least I haven't seen it before. As of now I am still working on a name for this block

So to get started on this block we first need to select our fabrics. For this block we are going to have three fabrics. For this quilt I would like to keep the color scheme to Blue/Green/Orange. I would prefer bold jewel tone fabrics that contrast well with the background and colors that are complimentary to each other. Please stay away from pastels for this project.

A - Background star points- Blue or Green or Orange
B - Main star - Blue or Green or Orange
C - White/Cream/Low volume background fabric

The fabric cutting for this block is pretty simple.

A - Background star points- Blue or Green or Orange
1 - 8" Square

B - Main star - Blue or Green or Orange
6 - 5" Squares

C - White/Cream/Low volume background fabric
1 - 8" Square
2 - 5" Squares
4 - 4.25" Squares

Once we have our fabrics take the two 8" blocks (A & C) and place them with front sides facing and sew a 1/4" seam around the entire perimeter of the block.

Next cut the block on the diagonal in both directions

Set the seams and press open

 Press the seams open

Line up the 45 degree line on your ruler up to the seam of the block and trim down to 5"

Draw a line perpendicular to the seam of each of the half square triangle blocks as well as on the diagonal of the 2 5" (C) blocks. Pair one 5" (B) block to each of these and lay them face to face.

These lines are used as a guide. Sew a straight line 1/4" from the mark on both sides. Using your rotary cutter, cut these 6 squares along the mark between the two seams.

 You should now have 4 of each of the following

Set the seams and press them open on each of the blocks

Line up the 45 degree line on your ruler up to the seam of the block and trim down to 4.25"

Add the remaining 4 4.25" (C) blocks and you should now have 4 of each of the blocks below

Now to assemble the star yet to be named block
Place the 4 4.25" (C) blocks in each of the corners
Place the 4 4.25" HST in the middle with white facing in

Next place the squares with the accent fabric to the right as shown below

The remaining squares with the accent fabric to the left finish out the layout

Sew each row together and press the seams open
Beware that the intersection at the corners of the inner white square are bulky and should be sewed and pressed carefully

Sew each row together and trim the block down to 15.5" square

Do Good Stitches....Nurture

Been sewing here and there......been mostly working on the house. I will keep this short and sweet. I joined the nurture circle of Do Good Stitches last month. Here is my last two months of blocks. Seems like I am unable to just make two blocks per month. I do love to sew!

Busy busy bees....

My poor Janome had its first run in with the sewing machine doctor. She got jammed up and something bent inside and the bobbin was sliding around and needles were snapping left and right. I took her in and had her all fixed up, my trusted 100 pound Bernina picked up the slack while she was away.

Despite some set backs with my machine I was able to finish up these projects and get them sent off for Margaret's Hope Chest. The first is a finished quilt for "A Mother Hope". This is for women who are struggling with postpartum depression. I was able to use all fabrics from my stash with the exception on the backing which is a pretty blue flower print that I didn't get a good picture of. 

The next one is a pixilated heart for "Hearts of Hope". I added extra rows to the top and bottom to increase the size some. I wanted to quilt this as well but was up against a time line with a broken machine. This top went to Margaret's Hope Chest as well.

Finally my last project were these "Be good to your heart" blocks for Margaret's Hope chest.

I already have a bunch more projects in the works. I just joined a circle of do good stitches and am working on a baby blanket for a co-worker as well as 100 projects around the new house. Pictures to follow. Hope your weekend was amazing!

So much sewing so little time. Here are the works in progress as of this week.

A Mother's Hope for Margaret's Hope chest.

Top finished, back is ready, need to rescue batting from storage. 

Had an accident with one of my quilt hangers during the quilt shoot and was replaced with my trusty husband. See how he wears the other quilt toga style. 

I added a row of pink squares on both ends of the quilt to make it a little larger. In all honesty I didn't add up the squares correctly and ended up cutting way too many!

Half a Heart!

I am working on both of them at the moment....

Project #1: Pixelated heart

This still needs a few rows added. I wish I had used darker pinks for the heart!

Project #2: Be Good To your Heart Block

Great way to use up scraps from your stash. Most of these came in scrap bags and weren't really my thing. 

Project #3: Mother's Hope Quilt

Top is almost together. Need to finish sewing top and border.

Blogger BOM Finale - Nine Of Diamonds

Today is the finally installment of Blogger BOM. I can't believe how fast the time has gone. It is finally my turn to share my block. I have been trying to decide what block I wanted to share. I went through several options. Originally I wanted to share a vintage blocked called the Polaris Star. In the end I couldn't make it work. I ended up coming up with this block which I believe is original. If it is a block I am not familiar with I would love to know what its called. I have been calling this block "Niine of Diamonds"

To start you need to cut your fabrics

In this example I used the following fabrics

(A) Pink Flower Print In 9 Patch                    (1) 2.5" x 8"       (1) 2.5" x 2.5"

(B) Multi Colored Floral Print in 9 Patch        (2) 2.5" x 8"

(C) Blue Border for 9 Patch                           (1) 1.5" x WOF

(D) Dark Pink Corner Pieces                         (2) 2.5" X 2.5"

(E) Grey and White Print Boarder                  (1) 2.0" X WOF

The fabric for this block is quick to cut and comes together easily. To start take one 8" strip of fabric (A) and (B) and sew together.

Square up the end of the joined pieces and cut off 2.5"

Set aside the 2.5" piece you cut off. Sew the second 8" strip of fabric (B) onto the remaining piece on the other side of fabric (A)

Cut two 2.5" strips from the sewn strips.

Sew the 2.5" square of fabric (A) to the 2 piece unit from step two and assemble the 9 patch block as shown below.

Add fabric (c) to two sides of the 9 patch block. Trim the fabric flush with the 9 patch.

Sew fabric (C) to the remaining two sides of the 9 patch and trim flush to the 9 patch. Set the 9 patch unit aside.

Sew one piece of fabric (E) to each of fabric square (D). Trim flush to the squares.

Sew a piece of fabric (E) to the remaining side of the above units. You will end up with fabric square (D) surrounded by fabric (E)

Cut these units on the diagonal to end up with 4 corner pieces.

Sew the corner pieces on using the seems on the blue surround as a guide.

Trim down the corners of the blue surround.

Add the remaining 2 corner units and trim down the block to 9.5" square.

I love how they look all together!!! I think this would make a great quilt with a common fabric for (C) to tie the quilt together.
