Nurture circle quilts finally done!!!

I have finally finished the two quilts for the Nurture circle of Do.Good.Stitches.

I have a couple good reasons for why these are so late. In August I had a baby girl named Abigail Grace. She is a cute distraction that has been sucking up most of my free time and sleep. She is 7 weeks old now and starting to sleep a little better. Fingers crossed!!!

My other daughter Mirabelle turned one in July and has learned to walk and is running a muck.

The other thing that has been taking up my time is this crunchy masterpiece that we bought at the end of July. It needs many things and we are in the process of tearing up the inside.

And we are also finishing up a kitchen remodel in the house we are living in. Here is the awesome back splash we put in. God willing we will get this kitchen done soon. We started it back in 2015 when before Mirabelle was born!!!

In March we did this block by Patch the Giraffe called Picnic Pinwheel. I blogged about it here. I am not sure what about this quilt that caused me such trouble. But it seemed like I hit so many snags on this one. First I cut the backing wrong, so I had to piece it. Not a big snag but annoying to have an extra seam. Then I quilted it and bound it and right before I tossed it in the wash I noticed that there was a HUGE pucker. I tried to smooth it out but it was just too big. So in the end I had to unstitch oh so much of the quilt and quilt it again. Let me tell you that unquilting is much more time consuming than quilting. Especially when you have the helping hands of a toddler.

For the backing I used cross stitch in teal by Amanda Jean Nyberg of Crazy Mom Quilts.

For the May quilt I put together a scrap square that I called Hollywood Squares. I blogged about it here. This one was less trouble but I was holding onto it so I could mail both quilts together.

For the backing I used a combination of solid Kona fabric in a dark teal (glacier) and a complimentary fabric that I dug out deep from my stash.

Bloggers Quilt Festival - A river runs through

This is a quilt I made for my step daughter Michelle. An exercise in stash busting and so many HST. My least favorite part was trimming up all the HST. I used low volume fabrics along with blue, greens and purples. I added a navy strip to the sides and trimmed it with a lime green binding. She loves it and it should gets lots of use this winter.

The best thing I've ever made.....

This project has been a long time in the making. My husband and I tried to start our family when we got married in 2009. We struggled to get pregnant but were able to in early 2014. That pregnancy ended in miscarriage and I had about given up hope that we would be able to have a child of our own. A few months passed and Thanksgiving day 2014 we found out that we were expecting again. I was hesitant to get excited until after we saw the doctor. The pregnancy progressed smoothly and we were planning for the baby to arrive in early August, Two weeks before I was due I was admitted to the hospital due to complications. Mirabelle made her way into the world on July 23rd. She is by far the cutest thing I have ever made!

Now that she is 8 weeks old and I am getting a little more sleep I have started sewing again. The best part is that if I bring her sleeper into my craft room the sound of my sewing machine soothes her right to sleep. If she isn't sleeping then she "talks" to me while I sew. Since Mirabelle was born I have finally gotten this quilt done for her. I have a few more in the works for her but they are behind a few more urgent projects.

This quilt originally started with inspiration from a quilt I had seen on the cover of Quilt Magazine called Spring Cleaning. You can find the original here. It started as a quilt I was making for our master bedroom and a way to work away at my scrap bin. In the end I changed gears and changed it to a smaller quilt for the baby. And although I used a lot of scraps I still have a mountain left.

I finished the top at the end of April. I had some trouble finding a backing I liked. It was one of the few times I was willing to pay full price for fabric but couldn't find anything I liked. I came across this fabric in Allegan MI. It was an end of the bolt clearance and they barely had enough to back the quilt. I love the storks and babies. I couldn't be happier with the fabric just got lucky and got it for a steal.

I think I auditioned every fabric I owned for the binding. I settled on blue with

white stars.

I even broke out the manual and figured out how to do more than a straight stitch on my fancy machine to make a tag with her name and birthday. Pictures of the baby on the quilt coming soon. Linking it up to Finish it up Friday @ Crazy Mom Quilts.

Do.Good.Stitches Nurture August Final Pics

Here are the final pictures of the August quilt for the do.Good.stitches Nurture circle. It has been washed and bound for a minute but the weather has been less than cooperative in Ohio.

I shared a tutorial for this star here. This will be headed to My Very Own Blanket in good old Ohio.

Busy busy bees....

My poor Janome had its first run in with the sewing machine doctor. She got jammed up and something bent inside and the bobbin was sliding around and needles were snapping left and right. I took her in and had her all fixed up, my trusted 100 pound Bernina picked up the slack while she was away.

Despite some set backs with my machine I was able to finish up these projects and get them sent off for Margaret's Hope Chest. The first is a finished quilt for "A Mother Hope". This is for women who are struggling with postpartum depression. I was able to use all fabrics from my stash with the exception on the backing which is a pretty blue flower print that I didn't get a good picture of.

The next one is a pixilated heart for "Hearts of Hope". I added extra rows to the top and bottom to increase the size some. I wanted to quilt this as well but was up against a time line with a broken machine. This top went to Margaret's Hope Chest as well.

Finally my last project were these "Be good to your heart" blocks for Margaret's Hope chest.

I already have a bunch more projects in the works. I just joined a circle of do good stitches and am working on a baby blanket for a co-worker as well as 100 projects around the new house. Pictures to follow. Hope your weekend was amazing!

Bad Bad Blogger - Finish It Up Friday

I have been pretty quiet as of late. I wish I had some awesome excuse. I wasn't traveling in the south of France. I wasn't building homes for the poor of Guatemala. I wasn't off saving the world/living an exotic life of leisure/curing cancer/saving babies. I was cleaning/traveling to Columbus/making green smoothies/and going to the gym. I started healthing up my life at the beginning of the year. A new years resolution that has stuck around for at least half of the year. Thus far I am down 50 plus pounds and I feel great!

I am in for another long long stretch in Columbus. I feel like this is my summer home! There is a great charity in Columbus called My Very Own Blanket. I had come across them when I was in Columbus last year. The founder loaded me up with a huge bag of scraps and some pre-cut 8 1/2 inch squares. I happily carted my loot back home. I knew it wasn't for me but I still get excited about having new fabric to play with. I would like to mention that Connecting Threads donates alot of scraps of fabric and batting to MVOB. If you aren't familiar with Connecting Threads do yourself a favor by going to their site. They have awesome prices on thread and fabric. I only found out that the distribution center was located in Columbus when my ordered arrived at my house. The scraps I received from MVOB looked like alot of fabrics I was familiar with so I asked the next time I was at MVOB. As it happens all the ends/scraps/unsellables get tossed into bins. They donate these to MVOB who uses them through volunteers and some inmates to create quilts for kids in foster care.

I have a couple tops that I finished up for MVOB.

Many more quilts to come, I am considering these "finished" as I have already returned them to MVOB.

Friday Finish - Welcome to the Jungle

I finished up this quilt for Margaret's Hope Chest. Carin had graciously participated in our Blogger BOM and was the guinea pig for the first month. She put out a call for these "Fun In The Middle" blocks and had enough to make 10 quilt tops. She decided to complete the quilts for orphans in Guatamala. She needed volunteers to make 10 quilts more and I offered to do one. These blocks come together super fast and are a great way to show off fussy cuts of novelty fabrics. Carin's tutorial for the block can be found here.

I have been torn for the name of this quilt. Animal Crackers, Welcome to the Jungle, At the Zoo. I can't decide and it has been brought to my attention that not all these blocks feature animals (No robots in the zoo).

Stripey binding from "Traveling Stash" box and super soft flannel backing that makes me think of a soft yellow ducky.

Very happy with how the quilt turned out. It is my third finish of the year on the way to 13 in 2013.

Finally Finished Friday

This one has been a long time in the making and is the 1st finish of 2013. This is for Megan's baby girl Marin. Megan didn't find out the gender of the baby before she was born. So as a result this was a gender neural baby quilt. I used several owl prints including Ten Little Things by Jenn Ski for Moda. Sadly the baby's grand mother made her a quilt as well with some prints from the same collection. Just goes to show you there aren't very many gender neutral baby prints. Anyway I didn't get this finished before the baby was born. She is getting big and cuter every day.

The pattern of the quilt is New Wave by Oh! Fransson. The quilting is a variety of free motion and regular stitching. I did something different in each section. Backing is red with a line of yellow owls ( I forgot to get some pictures of the back, it was cold and windy). Fabric is an assortment. I love the blue binding I think it brings it all together. Here is a little close up of the quilting. I used a variegated yellow thread. Glad to be done with this one and get it off in the mail to Megan and Marin!

Fall Finish Up -WIP

My UFO list of out of control. I am trying to chop it down by the end of the year. No new projects until I have finished at least half of these.....Here is what I have.....Finished some in the process of writing this long post!
