I'm so crafty it scary!

Just a quick post about something I whipped up for my little girl this weekend. I started thinking about making trick or treat bags long before I had kids. I bought the fabric and it has been in my stash for some time now. Either that or I caught it on clearance. 

When Moda came out with "Candy" charms I did an "I want Candy" charm swap. I enclosed a piece of the candy print at the time with each pack I sent out to the people who were my swap partners. It was also about that time that everyone was taking on the scrap vomit quilts and granny squares. There really is so much you can do with a 2.5" square! 

So in conclusion it looks like this fabric has been in my grasp since 2012, and I am pretty sure its not the oldest stash fabric. Some day I will get help for my fabric buying..... You can catch a glimpse of my fabricy shame in the background of the picture. At least now it is well organized by color. 

So the day before the trunk or treat I decide that I want to make a trick or treat bag for Mirabelle. I was up with baby Abigail and surfing around the internet. I found this pattern and decided it was a better option than trying to reinvent the wheel or work out some of my half baked ideas. 

I think it turned out pretty good. I didn't get any actions shots of its use though. Hopefully I will be able to soon. 

What's great about this pattern is that you can make any size you would like. I scaled down the pattern from a 15" square to a 12" square. I also cut my fabric into 2 rectangles (12" x 24") instead of 2 12" squares. Mostly to save me the headache of having to line up one more side. I still stitched the side so there would be a seam to line up things. 

The bag is reversible an it comes together very quickly. I waited until the day of the trunk or treat and was done in less than an hour. It might take you longer to pick fabrics from your stash! I just happened to have one of the fabrics in my collection that she used in her tutorial.

Arrrrggggg I found some booty....

I was cleaning up last night. Technically I was searching for fabric to go with this quilt I finished up for my step daughter Gabby. I am looking to make a coordinating pillow case. It is hard to believe that with all the fabric I have, I don't have the right fabric. Or at least I don't have a large enough chunk of blue or red to make a pillow case. I am pretty sure I can find some in my stash but maybe I am being toooooo picky. I am getting no sympathy from my husband on my fabric stash woes. 

 So I was digging in the last couple totes of fabric and crafts that I haven't yet put away and I unearthed some buried treasure, or booty if you will. Some time ago Moda came out with charm packs that were 2.5" square, they called them candy. I got the bright idea to start a swap and call it I want candy. The idea was that you would get 5 partners and you would send each 50 2.5" squares that you had cut from your stash. In the end you would end up with 250 different fabric squares to play with and enjoy. About the same time there was a quilt floating around the interwebs called a scrap vomit quilt.

Although this is not my puppy dog, it is a very cute English Springer Spaniel much like my dog Turkey. So anyway the craze for candy was in, I hosted a swap, and was cutting 2.5" squares out of all my fabrics. At some point the hype died down and I put the squares in a shoe box for a rainy day when I decided what to do with them. Yesterday I stumbled upon the box in question.

Holy scrap! That is a lot of squares! The timing couldn't be better as I am currently working on a triple Irish chain quilt, which turns out to be the basis of a scrap vomit quilt.

So I will be adding these to my quilt of scrappy goodness. But in the meantime I saw something shiny online and decided to try one or two blocks. It is a great way to use up my scraps that are less than 2.5"

Om nom nom.....I still want candy and a finish..

When you feed him candy he looks like the plush on the left, when you fail he looks like the plush on the right. In any event he is very cute. And it brings me to my next point, the I WANT CANDY fabric swap. The sign ups for the fabric swap ends 10/21 at midnight. To date we have about 20 participants and if you haven't signed up yet you have less than 24 hours and counting.

So here is what I have been up to this last week. I have been cutting 2.5" squares like its my job. To date I have 500 different squares. I received some squares from a 2.5" fabric swap over at Gnome Angel. That fabric swap inspired me to host one of my own. With the squares I have plus the ones from the upcoming swap I should have about 1000 different fabric squares. Now I just need to decide what I want to sew with all these beauties.

I have been cutting and packaging candy bags for my swap participants.

I have also been cutting the prize pack of 200 2.5" fabric squares for the give away. See more here 

I have been working on my scrappy stash blocks for the Ellison Lane Scrappy Stash QAL. I have 5 finished and 9 blue blocks in the almost finished stage.

And last but certainly not least my friend Megan had a beautiful baby girl a few weeks back named Marin.

Even though this little lady stayed in her momma for over 42 weeks I still couldn't get it together to finished the quilt before she was born. Megan didn't find out the gender of the baby before she was born.  So I went with gender neutral brights. The baby's grandmother used the same line of fabric 10 little things by moda. I am not bitter at all. Here is the finished quilt top. I hope to have it quilted before the baby starts college.
